1. why are you looking to change jobs
before you can consider a job role it's really important to revisit the reason you are wishing to move in the first place. look at the drivers that prompted you to seek a new position and keep them fresh in your mind.
2. is the role right for you?
a job offer doesn't mean the job is right for you. does the role provide you with your job needs. remember job satisfaction and working environment are far bigger motivators then financial reward. a pay rise is a short term motivator. after living on a new salary for 1 month you will accommodate the increase into you general lifestyle. the right job will provide an enjoyable mix of challenges and tasks with a group of like minded colleagues.
3. when should i hand in my notice?
notice should not be given until you have an offer in writing. on occasion these written offers have been faxed/emailed to recruitment consultants when notice is time sensitive.
4. i have a 3 month notice period will i have to work it?
if you have agreed a 3 month notice period with your employer then you are obliged to complete this period.
you may negotiate with your employer to have this time reduced if consented by both parties.
5. my employer has counter offered, what do i do?
consider the next move very carefully. what has changed, has your current employer addressed all the issues which prompted you to seek a new employer? does the counter offer improve your salary, progress your career or change your location? what was it about the original job offer made to you that appealed enough to make you hand your notice in in the first place? it's really important that a counter offer fulfils all your needs, if not then it really may not help you in the long term.
6. i'm not sure if i want the job
it can be difficult sometimes when you get a job offer through a recruitment agency because there can be very little effort involved and indeed it can happen very quickly. when applying for a job more traditionally the process can take up to 4 weeks and involve many stages, this gives you more time to think and consider a job if it is finally offered.
it's not a good idea to accept any job that you are not sure about. try to compile a list of pro's and con's to help you decide which job is right for you. try not to let others influence your decision.
